Fed: Labor removes right to negotiate from native title policy
The Labor Party has needed to explain the apparent watering down of its native title
policy at the Hobart national conference.
Australian Democrats Senator ANDREW BARTLETT says a resolution supporting native title
holders' right to negotiate incorporated into the Labor Party policy at the 1998 national
conference was dropped in the policy adopted at the Hobart conference.
He says the removal of support for the right to negotiate was a significant watering
down of the Labor policy.
Senator BARTLETT says it appears that Labor has quietly got rid of the right to negotiate
clause in its policy without an open debate.
He says it was imperative the Labor Party clarified its policy on native title.
